  I INTRODUCTION
Platinum is the most important of the group of elements called the platinum metals, the other members of which are ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium. Platinum metals were probably used in alloyed forms in ancient Greece and Rome and were first mentioned in European literature in the early 16th century. The separation of the other platinum metals from platinum and from each other was accomplished in the early 19th century.

Platinum is mined all over the world.  In the late 1980s, the Soviet Union and South Africa were the leading producers. Other leading producers are Canada, Colombia, and the United States.

II PROPERTIES
Platinum is a relatively rare, chemically inert, metallic element that is more valuable than gold.  Platinum is a grayish-white metal with a hardness of 4.3. Small amounts of iridium are usually added to increase its hardness and durability.  It has a high fusing point, is malleable and ductile, expands slightly upon heating, and has high electrical resistance. Chemically the metal is relatively inert and resists attack by air, water, single acids, and ordinary reagents.

III MARKETS
Demand for platinum has grown much faster than supplies during the last five years.  Platinum has far more industrial uses than either gold or silver.  Half of the annual supply of platinum involves industrial consumption which means that these consumed supplies need to be regularly replenished.  Auto catalytic converters and platinum’s role as a catalyst in “cracking” crude oil are both examples of applications that consume this metal. And highlights why it’s in such demand.  After a period of surplus and low prices during the early and mid 1990s, when high exports of platinum from Russia coincided with a decline in autocatalyst demand, the situation changed abruptly as the decade drew to a close. Since 1999, the Chinese platinum jewelry market has boomed, and more recently there has been a substantial return to platinum in autocatalysts.  Industrial demand, meanwhile, has continued to grow steadily. The result has been a series of annual supply deficits between 1999 and 2001.

Market Uses
Jewelry
Having its roots in the turn of the century Art Nouveau movement, this has become the predominant market for Platinum. The metal's purity, rarity and value are prized in high price niche markets where it is often set with the world's most precious stones or in more simple pieces for the higher volume markets. It forms the keystone of the Japanese bridal market and has seen dramatic growth in the last 5 years as a fashion item in China and North America.  A considerable amount of the platinum used in the United States goes into jewelry, in which it is often alloyed with gold. It is also used for dental fillings.

Control of Motor Vehicle Pollution
As the world strives to clean up the pollution from vehicle emissions, it looks to Platinum, in conjunction with Palladium and Rhodium. Ever-tightening global legislation has led to the development of these unique pgm automobile catalysts which are first coated on a ceramic substrate, mounted in a stainless steel canister and installed in the exhaust system of the vehicle. These catalysts in petrol engines convert over 90% of an automobile's hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide from the engine are converted into the more environmentally friendly carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour. It is estimated that to obtain this result, the uncleaned exhaust gases pass over an area of approximately 10,000 square meters as they weave through the coated honeycomb of the catalytic converter.

Enhancement of Computer Data Storage
One of the computer industry's challenges is to maximise the amount of data stored on hard discs while seeking to miniaturise the size of the hardware. Some computer hard discs now use the unique catalytic properties of Platinum to enhance the magnetic field created in those discs facilitating higher density data storage and more rapid data access by the user.

Scientific Developments
Because of its chemical inertness and high fusing point, platinum is used for measuring high temperatures, and it is valuable for producing laboratory instruments such as crucibles, tongs, funnels, combustion boats, and evaporating dishes.

Glass Production
Platinum crucibles and equipment are used extensively in the production of glass fiber and high quality optical glass for liquid crystal displays where the particularly aggressive nature of the molten product is tamed by Platinum's operating efficacy in such high temperature environments.

Fuel Cells
Platinum is at the forefront of pioneering development work currently underway by many of the world's automobile companies to bring fuel cell powered vehicles to commercial viability by 2005. The fuel cell uses Platinum to promote the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to produce water while in the process creating sufficient electrical power to drive a vehicle. Pollutants from this process are negligible. A parallel program is being carried out to examine the viability of stationery applications such as supplying power for domestic households.

IV INVESTING
Platinum offer many advantages that help investors secure the safety of their wealth:

"Platinum is rare.  Platinum is the rarest of all Platinum; up to 20 times rarer than gold, and because of its remarkable properties, industry is constantly finding new uses for it.
"Platinum often moves in the opposite direction of traditional investments, making it a good way to stabilize the value of your portfolio.
"Platinum also can be attractive as a stand alone investment.  The widening gap between production and demand means there is simply not enough Platinum being produced today meet the anticipated demand for the metal.  As Platinum reserves decline, the price of Platinum is expected to rise.
"Platinum is an excellent hedge against inflation. In countries where the money has become valueless or nearly valueless, modern day Brazil or Italy, the purchasing power of an ounce of Platinum has remained nearly the same.
"Platinum is one of the most liquid of all investments. It is readily portable, easy to store, and is recognized world-wide.  It is easily and discreetly bought and sold.  It can be easily converted to cash at any time.
